Do you know a Brass Band where the average age of the players is over seventy---- A band in which there are no 'learners'or 'passengers'---- Where all performers can sight-read a piece of music at a moments notice?
A band where some of the players, (now aged over seventy) began to learn their instrument before they were aged ten?
It is a sort of musical 'Dads Army' - a bunch of happy instrumentalists, some of them in the autumn of their lives, but who are not yet ready to join Gabriels' horn -- such is their love of music and the pleasure that it gives to others. That is Redcliffes' unique contribution to the arts -----
Ye Olde Brass.
The aim of Ye Olde Brass is to bring a little enjoyment into the lives of the aged and infirm residents of nursing homes, retirement villages and Senior Citizen venues. This is achieved through their music with mid-week daytime concerts. Initially the area was confined to the Redcliffe Peninsula but has now expanded to Beewah, Bribie Island, Caboolture and numerous northern Brisbane suburbs.
Special concerts are held at the Redcliffe RSL (in the Kokoda room) and at the Bribie Island RSL clubs. These concerts are free to the public and all are welcome.
Through regular rehearsals we strive to maintain a high musical standard and to play items that will appeal to people of all ages. The band has an opening theme song and one of the lines clearly indicates the range of music that is presented by the band. ("From pops to classics we can play'')
Ye Olde Brass is a non-profit organisation relying heavily on raffles and donations to fund their activities. Even so, through the committment and hard work of all who have served on the committee, full uniform, instruments and music have been provided to the members without incurring a membership fee.
